After years of quiet luxury and minimalist dressing, men&rsquo;s fashion is getting louder, more layered, and a lot more personal.

We&rsquo;re living in an era where everything feels &ldquo;maxxed out.&rdquo; Spend enough time online and you&rsquo;ll eventually run into the term &ldquo;lookmaxxing,&rdquo; the controversial internet obsession with optimizing appearance through grooming, fitness, styling, and self-improvement. The concept first gained traction in male online spaces, where people chased hyper-idealized versions of masculinity, sometimes through pretty extreme means.&nbsp;Putting the controversy aside, that mindset of pushing everything further may have quietly reshaped the way men think about style too.
As more men become increasingly intentional about how they present themselves, a bigger shift has started happening across fashion: menswear no longer seems interested in staying quiet.&nbsp;Instead, it&rsquo;s moving toward a new kind of maximalism. Not the chaotic excess of the past, but something more considered, layered, and expressive. So what exactly is this &ldquo;neo-maximalism&rdquo;? And why are men suddenly embracing &ldquo;more is more&rdquo; again in 2026?

To understand where things are now, it helps to look back at what maximalism used to mean.
Historically, maximalism has always reflected the mood of its time. In the 1980s, fashion became deeply tied to wealth, power, and visibility. Think exaggerated power suits, baroque prints from Versace, gold chains, leopard patterns, and loud geometric graphics. The 2010s belonged to streetwear, where oversized silhouettes and visible branding shaped a new kind of carefully constructed cool. But by the early 2020s, menswear started stripping everything back. Quiet luxury took over. Neutral palettes, perfect tailoring, subtle fabrics, almost invisible logos. The mood became cleaner, calmer, more restrained.
At the time, it made sense. People were craving stability. Minimalism felt safe, polished, and emotionally controlled.
But after years of beige cashmere, discreet labels, and hyper-curated simplicity, things started feeling repetitive. Quiet luxury became so widespread that it slowly lost the thing that made it desirable in the first place: distinction.
Neo-maximalism feels like the reaction to all of that.
But unlike older versions of maximalism, this isn&rsquo;t really about showing off anymore. It&rsquo;s less &ldquo;look at me&rdquo; and more &ldquo;this is who I am.&rdquo; The focus now is on intentional styling, thoughtful layering, and self-expression. Every element is supposed to contribute something to the overall look.
That&rsquo;s why today&rsquo;s maximalism feels more curated than chaotic.

You see it in the way people layer colors and textures together. A printed shirt under a knit vest, worn beneath an oversized blazer. Chunky jewelry paired with tailoring. Bold color combinations balanced carefully instead of randomly. The styling still feels expressive, but there&rsquo;s more control behind it.
Gen Z has played a huge role in that shift. For younger consumers, fashion is less about dressing &ldquo;correctly&rdquo; and more about building an identity. In uncertain times, clothes also become emotional. Psychologists often describe this as &ldquo;dopamine dressing,&rdquo; using color, pattern, and visual stimulation as a way to counter stress or monotony.
The runway has already started reflecting that mood.
At Versace Spring/Summer 2026, creative director Dario Vitale revisited the house&rsquo;s 1980s DNA through strong shoulders, leather, color-blocking, and high-waisted tailoring. But instead of feeling purely flashy, the collection leaned into emotion and sensuality. The glamour felt more lived-in than performative.

Dries Van Noten approached maximalism differently under Julian Klausner, whose Spring/Summer 2026 menswear debut mixed embroidery, sportswear, tailoring, and vivid color into something energetic but still wearable. Opera coats appeared beside cycling shorts. Knit leggings were layered under tailoring. The collection looked rich without feeling costume-like.
Then there&rsquo;s Valentino under Alessandro Michele, who continues pushing a more romantic, emotionally driven version of maximalism. Inspired by fireflies, the Spring/Summer 2026 collection balanced sequins, sailor collars, metallic layers, and sharp tailoring with more structure and restraint than his earlier Gucci work.
The shift is happening beyond the runway too.

On red carpets, men are dressing with more intention again. Brooches, layered jewelry, tie pins, embellished tailoring, bold color combinations, all of it is coming back. Colman Domingo continues embracing dramatic color and accessories, while Bad Bunny pushes proportions and styling in even bolder directions.

What&rsquo;s interesting is that today&rsquo;s maximalism actually requires more precision than minimalism in some ways. It&rsquo;s less about randomly piling things on and more about understanding proportion, texture, balance, and mood. The best maximalist looks feel almost curated, like visual storytelling rather than trend-chasing.

For years, menswear operated under an almost moral version of minimalism. Clean lines, muted colors, subtle branding, pieces designed never to offend. It worked because it was elegant and easy to replicate. But eventually, everyone started looking the same.

Now, as more men start thinking about how they actually want to present themselves, fashion is opening back up to individuality again.
And in 2026, that individuality just happens to look louder, richer, more layered, and a lot more fun.
