The classic pattern just got a fresh update.

For something that has spent decades bouncing between French Riviera clichés and sailor uniforms, stripes suddenly feel interesting again. They're back across Spring/Summer 2026 collections, appearing on everything from breezy shirts to wide-leg trousers, but this time the mood definitely feels less yacht club.
Part of that comes down to how designers are treating them. Instead of relying on the familiar navy-and-white Breton shirt, stripes are becoming bolder, looser, and more experimental. Different widths, unexpected colors, and oversized silhouettes have replaced the coastal aesthetic most people associate with it.
Fret not, the nautical version isn't gone. It just means there are better ways to wear stripes if you're after something that feels more modern.
Move beyond navy and white: The easiest way to avoid looking like you're about to board a sailboat is to skip the classic Breton color combination. Earth tones, chocolate brown, olive, burgundy, muted yellow, faded blue, or soft green instantly make stripes feel more contemporary.
Go big and oversized: Fit changes the entire personality of a striped shirt. Relaxed camp-collar shirts, roomy button-downs, and oversized tees feel effortless, while slim-fitting striped tops can quickly veer into costume territory.
Layer with solid textures: One reason striped tops can feel overly nautical is when they're left to stand alone. Wear it over plain long sleeves or throw on a suede jacket, linen blazer, or a heavy overshirt to break up the pattern.
Don't be afraid of mixing prints: Stripes don't have to be paired with plain pieces. They work surprisingly well with checks, florals, and the like. Start easy by keeping things within a similar color family.
Use color strategically: If your striped piece is fairly neutral, introduce one unexpected color through your shoes, knit, or accessories. A burgundy loafer, mustard overshirt, or forest green cap feels much fresher.
