Economists track the Dow. We track the inseam. And right now, both are looking up.

There's a theory&mdash;delightfully unscientific, yet impossible to fully dismiss&mdash;that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/how-to-style-skirts-over-pants-fashion-trends-spring-summer-2026-street-style-runway-inspiration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">skirt</a>lengths move with the stock market. When the economy booms, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/bermuda-shorts-style-guide-summer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hemlines</a> rise. When it crashes, they fall. Flapper minis in the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/ferragamo-spring-summer-2026-runway-looks-milan-fashion-week" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roaring Twenties</a>, or floor-length everything after 1929. This phenomenon is called the Hemline Index, and it's been fashion's most entertaining economic indicator since 1920.
But here's the thing nobody thought to ask: what happens when men start showing some leg? Because lately, they are. 
<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/pedro-pascal-chanel-house-ambassador-photos-news-matthieu-blazy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pedro Pascal</a> appears on the cover of&nbsp;Fantastic Man this week, perched in ripped jean shorts, looking like he has absolutely nothing to prove. While <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/hudson-williams-oscars-red-carpet-2026-photos-balenciaga-stylist-heated-rivalry-connor-storrie" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hudson Williams</a>illuminated us last week in a Peloton campaign, dancing in all-white short shorts to David Bowie's "Fame" like the economy is literally his runway.
Speaking of which, the stock market went up over 3% after it. Coincidence? Almost certainly. Interesting? Absolutely.

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop-culture/gracie-abrams-paul-mescal-2026-baftas-red-carpet-photos-dating-age-relationship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paul Mescal</a>, sitting front row at Gucci's Spring/Summer 2025 menswear show in Milan in his signature tiny striped shorts, advocating loudly for the short inseam as a lifestyle, also produced some effects. Coincidentally, as those front-row legs were happening, the U.S. economy reportedly grew 3.5% that week.
Of course, the Hemline Index was never exactly peer-reviewed science&mdash;results have been inconsistent, and fashion is influenced by far too many factors to isolate economics as the primary driver. Culture, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/cinemacon-2026-recap-movies-releasing-announcements-avengers-doomsday-trailer-dune-3-the-odyssey-preview" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cinema</a>, and only one good-looking <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/beauty/most-handsome-guys-in-the-world-irish-paul-mescal-colin-farrell-barry-keoghan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">actor</a>in shorts might be enough.

But maybe the point was never precision. Maybe fashion has always been a collective exhale&mdash;and a visual way of saying we feel okay enough to take up a little more space, show a little more skin, care a little less about coverage. The skirt went up when women felt free. Now the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/men/cargo-shorts-trend-spring-summer-2026-menswear-runway-outfit-inspiration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shorts</a> are getting shorter, and the men seem genuinely unbothered. And the audience is totally grateful for it.
The market will do what it does. But we'll be watching the inseam.
