Inspired by Pop Art and &rsquo;80s design, the unexpected collaboration reimagines the Royal Oak in full color.

This is probably not the collaboration the watch world saw coming: Audemars Piguet and Swatch have teamed up to turn the iconic Royal Oak into a series of colorful pocket watches.
For the collaboration, the Royal Oak literally leaves the wrist behind. These new versions are designed to be worn around the neck, clipped onto a bag, slipped into a pocket, or displayed on a desk, pushing the watch further into fashion-object territory.

The collection includes eight models in bioceramic, mixing the architectural codes of the original 1972 Royal Oak with the playful spirit of the Swatch POP watches from the 1980s. Octagonal bezels, eight hexagonal screws, &ldquo;Petite Tapisserie&rdquo; dials, and brushed finishes all remain intact, just filtered through a much louder color palette. One model, called HUIT BLANC, even gives each of the eight screws a different color.
Underneath the more disruptive look, there&rsquo;s still real watchmaking involved. The watches use a new version of Swatch&rsquo;s SISTEM51 mechanical movement, assembled entirely through an automated process. Manual winding, over 90 hours of power reserve, and a Nivachron&trade; anti-magnetic hairspring give the project more substance than a typical novelty release.

Two formats are available. One follows the L&eacute;pine pocket-watch style, with the crown positioned at 12 o&rsquo;clock and a cleaner hours-and-minutes display. The other takes on the more traditional Savonnette construction, adding a small seconds counter at 6 o&rsquo;clock.
The collaboration pushes the limits of the Royal Oak without completely losing what makes it recognizable&mdash;and that&rsquo;s what makes it work. It&rsquo;s playful, slightly chaotic, and surprisingly self-aware.
The collection will be available exclusively at selected Swatch boutiques, with purchases limited to one watch per person, per day.
