Maximilian Davis has a penchant for celebrating heritage codes through his new Ferragamo creations.

The Spring / Summer 2023 runway show of Ferragamo was a highly anticipated outing that season, primarily because it was the debut of Maximilian Davis, its then-newly minted creative director. Months later, the results of this initial outing have finally made the stands, and we selected four stand-out items to watch out for the British creative director&rsquo;s first year at Ferragamo.

A celebration of geometry, Maximillian Davis took to the archives to derive this Ferragamo style from the &lsquo;90s, its shape and proportions reinterpreted to depict the brand&rsquo;s new look. Ranging from mini to large for the women&rsquo;s style and up to extra-large with a shoulder strap for the unisex variation, the cut-out bag is a standout carry-on that signals the turn of the Ferragamo era.

The graphic details can&rsquo;t be missed: a soft canvas core is encased by a brushed leather structure with geometric cut edges and cut-outs, all in daring monochromatic or bicolor shades: black-on-black, white-on-white, contrasting black and white, or its most signature color way: black with its lining in the new Ferragamo red.

<h3>The Elina Sandal</h3>

Proving that Maximilian Davis is a stickler for geometry, the Elina sandal takes on a sculptural approach to heels by reimagining the Ferragamo Gancini symbol into the heel of this architectural shoe. First seen on Ferragamo&rsquo;s much-anticipated Spring/Summer 2023 runway show, the Elina hugs and highlights the delicate features of the foot, while its padded square toe guarantees comfort despite its slim thickness.

While most of the sandals come in monochromatic versions across the whole heel, the only two-toned version is a ideal representation of Ferragamo&rsquo;s heritage: black nappa leather with a galvanised gold heel in a matte finish.

<h3>The Sneaker Project</h3>

Maximilian Davis proves that it&rsquo;s possible to introduce urban and athletic codes into a brand with a sophisticated Italian heritage. This new sneaker milks shape, texture and detail by morphing the Gancini symbol into a sequence of three tubular elements that comprise the sneaker heel. With a selection of tone-on-tone white, orange, nude, black and the brand&rsquo;s new signature red, as well as its graphic laces, the Ferragamo logo and hand stitching details, the sneaker retains the footwear artistry that Ferragamo was originally known for.

While upholding its heritage, Maximilian Davis made sure to incorporate details that still allow the shoe to stay true to its sporty function: soft and hard-working materials were used, including stretch knit, nubuck and split leather, while the cushioning and comfort was retained by the contrast of solids and voids in the sole.

An important part of Salvatore Ferragamo&rsquo;s history both as a brand and as an individual, the Wanda bag was first introduced in 1988 in honor of the late designer&rsquo;s wife, Wanda Ferragamo. Initially presented in its first release as a square bag, Maximilian Davis reworked the Wanda&rsquo;s silhouette to be re-released in three new models: a horizontal, clutch-like silhouette, a vertical square shape closest to its predecessor, and a mini version perfect for evenings.

&ldquo;It was about looking into the archive and establishing what could be redefined to become relevant for today,&rdquo; Maximilian Davis says. By reworking the Wanda with new geometric proportions that chime in with every dress code, Ferragamo&rsquo;s new creative director makes sure that the brand&rsquo;s heritage and history live on.
