Caught between the high-glam world of pageantry and the raw reality of Pinoy Big Brother, AZ Martinez strips away the polished veneer to reveal a star rooted in unapologetic authenticity.

AZ Martinez’s media presence can be described as “beautifully contrasting.” On the one hand, there exists the clean and curated feed on her Instagram, which has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers. Simultaneously, a quick YouTube of Google search reveals a stripped-down rendition of her filmed in the Pinoy Big Brother house, where she carried a girl-next-door look: hair tossed in a ponytail, wearing everyday pambahay clothes. AZ possesses the sort of appeal that can get just about anyone to fall in love with her unapologetic authenticity.
Regardless of which version of AZ you get to witness, it’s pretty clear that she’s gained traction. But, before she was the polished figure gracing Instagram feeds or the unfiltered reality TV breakout star, AZ Martinez was simply a young girl from Cebu learning what it meant to survive and eventually thrive.

Resilience was and is the headline of AZ’s story. Her resilience wasn't a product of arbitrariness. It was forged through a rough-around-the-edges upbringing shaped by deep family complications. “Growing up with challenges wasn’t easy, but it taught me resilience and understanding at a very young age,” AZ shared. “It made me appreciate the value of perseverance and faith. They also keep me grounded and motivate me to work harder not just for myself, but for my family who sacrificed so much for me.”
Taking center stage in her story of survival is her mother. “Despite everything we’ve been through, she never gave up and always put our family first,” she said. “She taught me to face life’s challenges with courage, kindness, and humility. Whenever I feel tired or discouraged, I think about everything she’s overcome, and it reminds me to keep going. Everything I achieve is also a way of honoring her sacrifices and making her proud.”
These formative years in her hometown gave her an unshakeable anchor. “Growing up in Cebu gave me a strong sense of who I am, and I always carry that with me wherever I go, especially in this industry,” AZ commented. Even with the inevitable code-switching that came with uprooting her life to pursue a career in Metro Manila, AZ still proudly champions her Cebuano roots, “So it naturally comes through most of the time. I worked on it by attending workshops and continuously practicing, and I'm grateful for everything I learned along the way. At the same time, I love that some of my projects allow me to speak Bisaya. It always makes me happy because it feels like bringing a part of home with me.”

It was this precise foundation of resilience that eventually propelled AZ onto the highly critical pageantry stage. Crowned Miss Summit International back in 2023 and appointed the Philippine Youth Ambassador that same year, she stepped into a world that is an emblem of perfection at its finest.
With an unwavering criteria dictating who makes it to the top, AZ strove to master the art of summiting the climb. “Pageantry gave me a strong foundation of confidence, discipline, and grace under pressure. It taught me how to express myself, connect with people, and stay composed even in challenging situations,” AZ reminisced. “Pageantry taught me discipline, composure, and how to represent something bigger than myself. Every movement, every word, and every action had to be intentional because I carried the responsibility of a title.”

But with her background as a beauty queen serving as the prelude to her rise to stardom, her ability to look past merely winning was what truly allowed her to evolve. She shared, “Of course, winning the title was a dream come true, but the journey itself taught me resilience, humility, and self-belief. Those experiences helped me realize that confidence isn’t about being perfect and looking like the perfect beauty queen standards.”
That realization was put to the ultimate test when AZ entered the Pinoy Big Brother house–a world that was a far cry from the glitz and glamor of her title sashes. Shapeshifting from a shining pageant girl to an unscripted housemate would be a tall task for anyone, but it was a remarkable role of a lifetime for AZ. “Inside PBB, though, there was no script, no preparation, and no perfect image to maintain,” she shares. “It was scary at first because I was used to being in control, but I realized that people connect more with authenticity than perfection. It was not easy. I kept overthinking.”

Nevertheless, this antithesis served her well, molding her into a breathing exemplar of embracing one's human condition. AZ spoke on this mindset shift, saying, “Mentally, I reminded myself that being vulnerable wasn’t a weakness. It was part of being human. PBB challenged me to embrace my flaws, express my truest emotions, and trust that people would accept me for who I truly am.” Ultimately, it worked.
Today, AZ’s unfolding chapter glows with a steady, upward momentum as she transitions into life as an up-and-coming actress. Risk is the operative factor in this new equation, but she continues to persevere. “I think the biggest risk is allowing myself to be open to a character who isn’t close to my own character and personality,” AZ says. “As an actress, growth happens when you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone, accept more difficult roles, and even risk making mistakes. It’s scary, but I know that’s where real growth begins.”
That willingness to take risks recently landed her a coveted opportunity: working alongside star-studded actors Alden Richards and Nadine Lustre in their much-anticipated show, Love, Siargao. “Being able to share scenes with them and learn from them was such a rewarding experience,” AZ praises.

Filming on the island added an extra layer of magic to the project, offering a calming escapism that she still frequents. Looking ahead to the release, her outlook is entirely bright and expectant: “I think the combination of an amazing cast, a meaningful story, and the island's unique atmosphere makes this project very different from my previous works, and I can't wait for everyone to see it.”
From A to Z, hindsight is 20/20 in AZ’s book, and the view from where she stands now is incredibly promising. Getting through girlhood was no easy feat, but if she could speak to her younger self navigating those early turbulent hurdles, she'd offer a reassuring promise: “Don’t be so hard on yourself. Everything you’re going through is preparing you for something greater.”
Now, with her sights firmly set on the horizon, she gazes into the future not with fear, but with a grounded sense of purpose and a clear vision of who she intends to remain. “I hope you never lose your kindness, your faith, and your passion,” she said, speaking to the future version of herself. “No matter how successful you become, always stay grounded and remember why you started.”
