Written by Danna Bernardino and directed by Jef Albea under Studio A Productions, Tulog Na brings the dead to life inside a morgue, exploring love, loss, sacrifice, and the regrets that linger long after a life has ended.

There is something inherently unsettling about a room full of bodies, especially when you know that, in this story, those bodies are not going to stay quiet. But Tulog Na is not really interested in frightening you. It is much more interested in making you listen.
From Studio A Productions, whose original Filipino productions often venture into darker and stranger territory, Tulog Na, written by Danna Bernardino and directed by Jef Albea, follows Rose and her husband, Mal, who run a modest funeral parlor, tending to bodies that arrive one by one, each carrying a story the world outside never fully heard.&nbsp;
Featuring the musical composition “Tulog Na,” written and composed by Ebe Dancel, the musical unfolds as the couple locks up for the night and the morgue empties of the living, the dead begin to stir—not as ghosts looking for vengeance, but as people still finishing the sentences their lives cut short.
The entire musical remains within the confines of the morgue, with embalming tables, metal trays, surgical instruments, and even the small toe tags attached to the bodies making the space feel unmistakably like a place meant for the dead. Under the eerie lighting, it initially feels cold and unsettling, but as the stories unfold, the morgue gradually becomes less a place of death and more a space where these lives are finally allowed to speak.

It is a fitting setting for Pokwang, who makes her theatrical debut as Rose. While this marks her first time performing onstage, she is not entirely new to stories centered on the lives of those who handle the dead.&nbsp;
In Dwein Baltazar’s Oda sa Wala, she played Sonya, a woman working in a funeral parlor whose life becomes entangled with an unclaimed body. But where Oda sa Wala found quietness in the solitude of a funeral parlor, Tulog Na opens the doors of its morgue and lets its dead speak.
The bodies that pass through Rose and Mal’s morgue come from entirely different walks of life. It keeps introducing people who, on paper, could not be more different from one another, carrying stories of family expectations, lost love, sacrifice, and dreams they had put away along the way. Yet every character carries a version of regret—the choice not made, the love not spoken, the life not lived the way they had hoped.
Tulog Na has a dark sense of humor, with laughter often arriving just before or after something heartbreaking. The jokes can feel almost inappropriate given where the story is going, but that discomfort is part of what makes them work. Grief is rarely solemn all the time; people joke at funerals, laugh when they are uncomfortable, and tell funny stories about someone they have just lost because remembering someone is not always about crying.
As the musical unfolds, however, the laughter gradually gives way to something heavier. The people who arrive at the morgue come from all kinds of lives and circumstances: someone who died long before they could experience their 10th birthday, a man whose life was ended by violence, an old woman who cannot even remember how she died, among many others. What makes their stories linger is how different each life is, and yet how familiar their regrets can feel. Some had barely begun living, while others had spent decades making choices they would only understand differently in hindsight.
The more we learn about them, the more we begin to understand the burdens they carried. What began as a strange and occasionally funny encounter with the dead becomes a much more intimate reckoning with lives that ended before they felt finished.

If there is one thing Tulog Na understands, it is that regret is not a failure but is simply part of being alive. Regret is the tax of having lived at all, and the only real choice we get is which of it we can carry without letting it break us.
The ending is neither happy nor sad. The musical does not promise that life gets better simply because you keep moving forward, nor does it insist that every dream will come true or every sacrifice will eventually pay off. Tulog Na does not give its characters the lives they wished they had, nor does it pretend that everything that happened to them can be made right. But neither does it leave them entirely in despair. Ultimately, what remains is a sense of having made peace with what cannot be changed
And while the musical is set in a world shaped by death, it leaves its audience with a question meant for the living: What will you do with the time you still have?
Not because all your dreams will come true. Not because every choice will be the right one. But because the life you have is yours alone, and perhaps that is enough reason to keep living it.
