Nic Chien is Lea Salonga’s son. He is a trans man. He is an actor. He is an artist. He is all of these things. But more than that, he is someone who understands that becoming is not the moment the curtain rises or falls. It is everything that happens in between.

In theater, every role begins with an agreement. An actor steps into a world already written: lines, music, blocking, and somewhere between rehearsal and performance, the body is asked to make it all believable. Life, in its own way, can ask for the same surrender. There are roles assigned before one learns how to reject them, names carried before one understands their weight, and expectations inherited before one has the language to say: This is not me. Pride begins, perhaps, in that refusal, and in the quieter courage of choosing what is.
For Nic Chien, theater and life mirror each other not simply because both involve performance, but because both have taught him what happens when a role no longer fits the person wearing it.
YOUNG NIC 
Long before he could articulate identity in the language he has now, Nic remembers wanting to enter stories differently. As a child, Chien gravitated toward male characters, not necessarily because he wanted to reimagine them, but because he wanted to become them himself. Recalling an early audition for Oliver!, he shares how he auditioned for the Artful Dodger and later learned that he “would have gotten it” had he been a boy. Looking back, the memory now feels strangely clarifying for the 20-year-old actor. At the time, however, Nic did not yet have the language to fully understand what he was feeling. “I didn’t even know that being trans existed,” he admits. “I wanted to look like a man. I wanted to look like a guy. I couldn’t articulate that when I was younger.” 
This is where theater and life begin to fold into each other. The stage is often described as a place of pretending, but for Nic, it also became a place where the truth pressed closer. He was not only drawn to roles; he was drawn to the possibility of being seen through them. “I like being seen and being masculine in general,” he says, before catching himself with characteristic caution. “Part of me is scared to say being a man because I don’t want to box myself in. I like the idea of just saying masculine because then I can change it up later. Gender is fluid. Sexuality is fluid.”&nbsp;

BORN FOR THE SPOTLIGHT 
At 20, Nic is still young enough to speak in second guesses and sudden clarities, but already old enough to know that becoming is rarely linear. He is a theater actor, a singer, a visual artist, a trans man, and the son of Lea Salonga. Each description is true, yet none fully contains him.
Being Lea Salonga’s son, of course, is not a minor detail. It means growing up near one of the most important Filipino performers of all time: the Tony and Olivier-winning actress who originated Kim in Miss Saigon, became the first Asian actress to play Éponine in Les Misérables on Broadway, and gave singing voice to Disney’s Jasmine and Mulan.
That is not a small shadow. It is a stage light, a literal follow spot.
Nic knows this, laughing as he calls himself a “nepo baby.” “I still think that especially because of who my mom is, I have more pressure on myself,” he says. “It’s distressing, but it’s also a very good motivator for perfection.” The pressure is not merely public; it is internal, too. “I’m very hard on myself as a person, not just in art, but in general as a human being.” Still, he does not speak of Lea’s legacy as something to escape. “I personally feel it to be an honor to be related to my mom because it makes me work harder, makes me strive for a level of integrity and a level of professionalism,” he says. “She’s a wonderful benchmark for me.”

There is no grand finality in the way Nic speaks about identity. There is, instead, a carefulness. He is not trying to turn his life into a neat coming-of-age arc. In fact, he resists the idea that transition is a clean destination. “I actually used to kind of think, maybe I would eventually be like, ‘I’m here finally,’” he says. “But I only recently discovered that that isn’t true.” For him, becoming does not end after a name, a pronoun, a body, or a public understanding catches up. “It can be identity. It can be anything really about who you are as a person.”
This is where the Pride of Nic’s story lives: not in spectacle or arrival, but in his right to remain unfinished.&nbsp;
PRIDE, PERFORMANCE, AND PERSONHOOD 
In Spring Awakening, the coming-of-age rock musical based on Frank Wedekind’s once-controversial 1891 play, adolescence is not presented as innocence but as confusion, desire, repression, and damage. Young people are left to make sense of their bodies and futures in a world that refuses to speak honestly to them. Nic played Moritz Stiefel, one of the musical’s most fragile figures, a student crushed by expectation, academic failure, and the violence of not being understood.
Nic immediately saw something of himself in the role. “I relate a lot to the character,” he says. Moritz, he explains, “generally doesn’t do well in school. He barely makes it.” Nic remembers his own difficult years in school, particularly around Grade 7 or 8, when motivation was low and assignments were hard to submit. “I really did not think that I was going to get good grades,” he says. But he did. “I ended up succeeding, actually getting better grades than I assumed.”
What stayed with him, however, was not only the academic struggle. It was the feeling beneath it. “Standing out, feeling like you don’t belong,” he says. “I feel like those experiences and being open with myself about them and confronting them and talking to other people about them has helped me learn more about myself instead of any kind of denial, any kind of restriction. It’s definitely helped me with my performance way more.”&nbsp;

For Nic, acting is not separate from self-knowledge. It is one of the places where self-knowledge is tested. To perform is to inhabit another person, but it is also to encounter one’s own limits: emotionally, socially, physically. During rehearsals, he says, he learned about adjusting to a workplace and understanding that people are rarely entirely good or entirely bad. “You have to prioritize the show,” he says. “You gotta learn how to prioritize the bigger picture and to also know that it is not black and white.” 
That awareness and his refusal of easy binaries runs through the entire conversation. Nic is deeply aware and honest of complexity, perhaps because he has had to make peace with so much of it in himself.
Still, honesty does not mean ease. When asked about the hardest part of being trans, Nic does not answer with a polished statement. He goes inward. “I have a lot of self-doubt and I’m a huge overthinker,” he says. The doubts arrive like spirals: “Are you pretending? Is it really this way? Maybe it’s just another influence that makes you like this and you’re not actually trans.”
If Spring Awakening gave him a language for alienation, Into the Woods offered another kind of mirror. The Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical begins with familiar fairytale figures chasing wishes only to reveal that desire is never as simple as getting what one wants. In its second act, the story dismantles the fantasy of completion. Happily ever after, it insists, is never the end of the story.
Nic played Jack, the boy who climbs toward a world larger than the one he knows. It is not hard to see the resonance. So much of Nic’s life, at least as he describes it, is about learning that one arrival simply opens into another question. Theater lets him stand inside that uncertainty. Life demands that he do the same.

Theater and life mirror each other for Nic because both are concerned with roles, but neither is only about performance. Both ask who he is when the preconceived or even inherited script falls away. Both ask what it means to be seen not as an idea, a label, or a famous person’s child, but as a person still choosing himself.
“People are complex. People change,” he says. “At the end of the day, all that really matters is that I’m happy living as a guy... happier living like this and more comfortable and not hurt and not hurting anyone.”
For all the weight around him, Nic is also funny, self-aware, and disarmingly young. He interrupts himself. He revises his thoughts mid-sentence. He worries about being misunderstood, then says something startlingly clear. That may be the most honest thing about him.
In a culture that often asks queer people to explain themselves neatly, Nic offers something less convenient but more human. Especially this Pride Month, we need to be reminded that there is courage in that. Toward the end of the conversation, what remains is not a label, surname, or role. It is a young man learning to trust the self he is still meeting.
