But beneath the blinding sequins lies a complex, resilient movement. What does it truly take to reign supreme in a region where dazzling artistry often collides with strict cultural norms?We sit down with four trailblazing drag queens from the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong to look beyond the makeup. From navigating local censorship to pioneering massive, arena-worthy productions, these powerhouse performers pull back the curtain on the state of drag in their respective homes, redefining community, survival and what it means to “go bigger” on their own terms.

<h2>Brigiding, Philippines</h2>

When Drag Race Philippines was first announced, the global fandom practically broke the internet. Audiences could not wait to see what the Asian queens would bring to the main stage, and honey, they did not disappoint! The debut season instantly became a global favourite, proving once and for all that Filipino queens possess charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent in absolute spades. Among the stellar cast of season one, one name already carried legendary statues before even stepping foot into the workroom: Brigiding. While expectations were sky-high, Brigiding brought something much deeper than just killer runway looks to the screen; she brought the heart of a mother.As the nurturing matriarch of the House of Ding, Brigiding knows firsthand that drag is as much the glitz and glam as it is about survival and community. In a world that can often feel fearful and uncertain, drag families serve as vital spaces for young artists trying to find their identity. Brigiding acts as a beacon of wisdom and support for the next generation, passing down the lessons she learned from her own legendary drag mother, DeeDee Marié Holliday. “I am very proud of my house and incredibly proud of my kids,” Brigiding shares warmly. “I think it is beautiful to share my experiences with the next generation of drag queens. Building my legacy brings me so much joy.”Even with dozens of international Drag Race franchises airing simultaneously around the globe, the Philippines continues to steal the spotlight and capture the hearts of global fans. According to Brigiding, the secret sauce lies in the country’s unique cultural and relentless creativity. “The Philippines has a rich and diverse culture, shaped by strong pre-colonial traditions and influences from various colonisers, making it truly unique,” she explains. Byt it is also the distinct Filipino spirit, often forged in the dace of adversity that makes their drag so magnetic. “The paradox of political and social inequalities in the country have pushed people to seek joy and remain optimistic,” Brigiding adds. “And that is why Filipinos embrace laughter and feel-good moments, and choose happiness despite hardships.”This collective pursuit of joy is exactly why drag families thrive so fiercely in the Philippines. It is a culture built on togetherness, impacting both daily life and the local nightlife scene. For Brigiding, keeping the industry inclusive and strong is a lifetime mission. “Within the drag community, creating a safe and supportive space is essential,” she says. “Drag families play a vital role in empowering the community, ensuring that the industry remains strong and inclusive.” By lifting up the youth and paving the way for the future, while spreading her wings in performing arts, she is also ensuring that the beautiful, resilient legacy of Philippine drag continues to rule the world.

<h2>Kumela Kumslut, Malaysia</h2>

If you throw her name out in Kuala Lumpur’s queer scene, besides nods of approval, you will immediately hear the distinctive clack-clack-clack of thumbs and middle fingers snapping in unison. It’s the ultimate sign of respect for the queen who has more than earned her crown. Meet Kumela Kumslut. Professional photographer by day and free-swinging drag performer by night, she is a creative powerhouse in every sense of the word. For nearly a decade, Kumela and her signature bright-coloured wigs have been synonymous with local nightlife. It all started at a Halloween bash 10 years ago where her debut caught the eye of organisers for Rainbow Rojak, a legendary Kuala Lumpur queer community collective, who asked her to host an upcoming event. She said yes, and the rest, as they say, is herstory.While her cheeky, provocative name proves that drag is never too serious, there is a powerful message hiding behind the persona. For Kumela, the stage is a megaphone for vital conversations. “I want to use drag as a medium to speak about an issue that is important to me, which is sex positivity,” she shares. “I also want to start a conversation on HIV and AIDS, because many young people in the community don’t seem to care about it, and that worries me.” Living and performing in Malaysia means navigating strict regulations, where laws and cultural norms heavily restrict LGBTQ+ expression. But limitations have not stopped Kumela from advocating for her community. To bridge the gap between nightlife and healthcare, she frequently collaborates with the PT Foundation, &nbsp;local community-based organisation. “Sometimes I’d have their representatives at the parties, and they would provide free screening or give away condoms for free,” Kumela says. “I’d also get them on stage to talk about what they do and basically share information about these things.”Being a fierce queen in KL requires a masterclass in streets smarts. Kumela fully understands the reality of the world she operates in, balancing unapologetic self-expression with survival. “You have to know where you can and cannot go, and when you should and should not say certain things,” she explains. “But you should always speak up for yourself and for those who cannot speak for themselves.” That intuition proved vital when authorities raided a club she frequently performed at, specifically looking for her. Luckily, she wasn’t on the line-up that night. The close call forced Kumela and her fellow queens to lay low and pause their drag activities for five to six months. “I hated the experience, of course, but we had to look after ourselves,” she recalls. For Kumela, laying low is as much about personal safety as it is about protecting the sanctuary they have built for others. “The reason why we have these events in the first place is to create a safe space for people who don’t feel safe in the outside world,” Kumela shares. “So it is important for me to keep it that way for everybody, especially my Muslim friends, because they would definitely get it worse.”While mainstream acceptance for drag artists in Malaysia faces an uphill battle with little light at the end of the tunnel, queens like Kumela Kumslut ensure that the flame of hope, community and resistance keeps burning bright.

<h2>Kumar, Singapore</h2>

If there’s one thing you need to know about Kumar, it’s that Singapore’s most recognisable comedy powerhouse refuses to be put in a box. While keeping perfectly in step with modern pop culture and shifting generational trends, Kumar remains fiercely anchored by one old-school rule: don’t label me. It’s a formula that works. Kumar has travelled the globe, bringing razor-sharp, fearless commentary and roaring laughter to an estimated half a billion people worldwide. But behind the iconic status lies a journey of pure resilience, family drama and a masterclass in survival.Kumar always knew the stage was home. The calling started early, though the road was not exactly smooth. “I started to attend dancing class when I was a kid,” Kumar shares. “However, when my father found out about it, he asked me to stop because he said dancing is for girls.” Pivot number one: acting, but that did not quite pan out either. The real magic happened when Kumar stumbled into stand-up comedy, landing a gig at the former Laughs Comedy Club in Singapore, playing an Indian drag queen. The universe clicked. Realising the stage was the ultimate calling, Kumar’s true breakthrough came as the star of the legendary Boom Boom Room. That unique, explosive blend of cross-dressing, singing and risqué stand-up cemented a career for the history books.In Singapore, perspectives on drag exist in a fascinating grey area, ranging from mainstream applause in nightlife and the arts to conservative pushback regarding LGBTQ+ visibility. Navigating this landscape has come with personal costs. “I have a lot of people that I got disconnected from just after they found out who I really am,” Kumar reveals. “And I don’t even mind, becauseI know at the end of the day, only my true friends are the ones that really get me and what I am doing.”The biggest hurdle was closer to home. When Kumar’s father first discovered the onstage cross-dressing, it caused a massive family rift resulting in seven years of silence between them. Because of the historical stigma surrounding gender non-conformity in the region, Kumar candidly admits that without comedy acting as a protective shield, life could have easily spiralled down a very dark path.Interestingly, one of Kumar’s biggest career regrets is never giving the drag persona a specific name. In the early days, this made it incredibly difficult for the public to separate the fabulous onstage character from the daily reality of an openly gay man. Today, that boundary is sacred. When the show ends, the makeup, the wit and the glamorous dresses stay on the stage. Offstage, Kumar is private, reserved and quiet — a deliberate lifestyle choice he credited as the ultimate secret to surviving the extreme stress of public life.For anyone looking to make moves in the entertainment industry or just life in general, Kumar breaks success down into a very specific mathematical formula, “30% risk-taking, 30% confidence, 30% knowledge and 20% being stupid. You have to change with time, you have to grow, you need to move to what people want o hear today,” Kumar shares. “I am more daring now because I have been allowed the space. But you have to read more if you want your audience to expand with you.”

<h2>Mocha Diva, Hong Kong</h2>

If you have ever witnessed a performer pull off a flawless chair split while looking absolutely flawless from head to toe, chances are, you were watching the one and only Mocha Diva. Originally hailing from the Philippines, Mocha Diva has been ruling Hong Kong’s nightlife since 2014. From her legendary sets at the Drag Extravaganza brunches and Lips Events to commanding the stage at Petticoat Lane, she has officially cemented her status as drag royalty. But her journey top the top was not a calculated masterplan. In fact, it all started by accident.When Mocha first dipped her toes into the drag world back in 2006, she was was actually a backup dancer for other queens. Everything changed one fateful Christmas when her drag mother asker to prepare a few songs. Mocha recalls her saying, “You should try doing drag; you’ll earn money that way.’” Her drag mother showed her the ropes, teaching her the intricate artistry of drag makeup. And, simply put, that was how it all began. Fast forward to today, Mocha is serving sickening looks on Drag Race Thailand and taking her signature high-energy performances worldwide — from Paris to Guam and the United States.The high life aside, it has not been all glitz, glam and outstanding ovations for Mocha. Navigating Hong Kong’s evolving drag scene has come with its fair share of hurdles. Two major challenges the community faces include the tipping dilemma as well as club culture boundaries, according to Mocha. Unlike the thriving tipping cultures in America and Thailand, Hong Kong has a long way to go. While Mocha’s star power now brings in top dollar notes, she notes that the younger, up-and-coming ones still struggle to get tipped well; sometimes not at all. Apart from that, due to drag shows taking place in bars and clubs, dealing with intoxicated patrons can be a minefield. “People will just disobey basic rules,” Mocha shares, “like touching the queens or pulling our hair. It is really difficult to navigate that boundary because asking them to stop can often lead to a negative reaction.”Despite the growing pains, the transformation of Hong Kong’s drag scene is nothing short of spectacular. When Mocha first arrived, drag shows were rare, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it events. But the culture truly blossomed when Petticoat Lane started hosting regular, electrifying shows. Recognizing the untapped potential of the city, Mocha co-established the celebrated Drag Extravaganza brunch series, permanently elevating the visibility and reputation of the art form.Today, Hong Kong boasts a vibrant, multifaceted drag community with more venues and acceptance than ever before. And Mocha Diva is not done yet. These days, she is paying it forward by stepping into the role of mentor, offering makeovers and tutorials to the next generation of aspiring local queens.
