Ballet Philippines turns to the journeying stories nestled in the northernmost islands of the Philippines to showcase a beautiful celebration of homegrown heritage on the classical stage.

Ballet has the power to transcend beyond form, turning classical techniques into beautiful stories that move culture forward. For its latest production, Ballet Philippines breaks away from traditional repertoire and shines the spotlight on homegrown cultural roots with &ldquo;PAGLALAKBAY: The Journey of the Sea People&rdquo;. Showing on April 10 to 12, 2026, this full-length original Filipino ballet piece has one mission: to celebrate and champion local narratives on the classical stage.

As its title portrays, movement sits at the very core of PAGLALAKBAY. With libretto by Sheree Chua, this piece showcases a beautiful narration of the Austronesian Migration. Here, ballet becomes a vessel carrying stories of travel, belonging, and cultural memory as the classical stage transforms into a breathing landscape of the Sea People&rsquo;s journey to their ancestral homeland in Batanes.&nbsp;
 Behind PAGLALAKBAY&rsquo;s story on the classical stage, the very idea for this production came from Ballet Philippines&rsquo; Ballet Brigade outreach program to Batanes in May 2024. At the media presentation ahead of the show, Sheree Chua emphasized this experience as the momentous inspiration behind her libretto for PAGLALAKBAY, highlighting how Ballet Philippines truly immersed with the locals in Batanes, exchanging cultures, performing dances, and sharing in each other&rsquo;s rich heritage. She also emphasized finding inspiration from her mother&rsquo;s wisdom.

&ldquo;Migration is often framed as displacement, but my mother showed me that movement can also be expansion, a widening of self without losing origin. In her life, I witnessed resilience, adaptability, and a deep, unshakeable sense of identity. Those same qualities underpin the Austronesian Migration story that informs this work.&rdquo;

PAGLALAKBAY&rsquo;s choreography channels both classical ballet techniques and the history of the Sea People. Sharing his creative process, Ballet Philippines Artistic Director Mikhail Martynyuk highlights the importance of incorporating Batanes&rsquo; natural movements. &ldquo;Batanes is wind, rocks, and ocean. As the scenery changes, the quality of movement changes as well. In &lsquo;PAGLALAKBAY&rsquo;, choreographic language becomes the main narrator: A low center of gravity, steady in the wind; steps are wide and grounded, moving against resistance; the body tilts forward, always in dialogue with the elements; the hands are not decorative, but functional, like a sailor&rsquo;s.&rdquo; Together, the choreography translates the resilience and fluidity of Batanes&rsquo; landscape into the grace of ballet, embodying a living dialogue between body, land, and sea.
Building on homegrown talent, PAGLALAKBAY is also shaped by a distinctly Filipino creative vision. The production&rsquo;s musical score is conducted by&nbsp;Ronald Vincenzo Khaw de Leon, an emerging young Filipino global talent who skillfully merged traditional beats of the Kalusan with the classical rhythms of ballet, while giving life to the stage is Filipino contemporary artist Leeroy New, who drew from a deep immersion in the homes and communities of Batanes to make sure the set design accurately translates its textures and spirit with precision and care.

More than a performance, PAGLALAKBAY is a beautiful reflection of the stories that make up our rich Filipino heritage and identity. With the belief that local indigenous stories deserve a place on the classical stage, Ballet Philippines President Kathleen Liechtenstein shares, &ldquo;We hope audiences leave with a deeper appreciation of the Sea People&rsquo;s journey and a renewed sense of pride in Filipino identity.
