Lasers have been around for a while, and was the top-tier hair removal option for those who preferred to permanently reduce or remove body hair. Compared to waxing, shaving, depilation, plucking, and epilation, lasers were (and still are) the method that produces the longest-lasting results. It used to be a quite uncomfortable, as most hair removal methods are, with some pain from the "passes" and discomfort from the cold gel used as lubricant between skin and machine.
These days though, most of the more advanced lasers no longer use gel, and procedures are faster, more efficient, less painful, and produce longer-lasting results. If you're preparing for summer with lasers, best to start as early as weeks or months before your trip.
We visited Skinhouse Laser in Pioneer to try out a session of GentleMax Pro Brazilian Laser&mdash;here's what to expect for your first sesh.&nbsp;

First things first, how does a laser work in removing hair? According to <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/laser-hair-removal/about/pac-20394555#:~:text=During%20laser%20hair%20removal%2C%20a,or%20delays%20future%20hair%20growth." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mayo Clinic</a>, the laser emits heat-producing light that targets your hair follicles, essentially delaying or inhibiting future hair growth. The hairs are bound to fall out after a session, which you shouldn't try to help out by plucking lest it stimulate regrowth. One session visibly reduces volume of hair, but most people need several sessions before all hair is gone or at least reduced and thinned significantly.&nbsp;
Unlike other methods of hair removal that pull the hair at the root, laser still remains the best as it's the only method that really shows visible long-term reduction of hair volume, plus it helps avoid ingrown hair when it's growing back, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a.k.a. when your skin darkens after inflammation&mdash;something that could happen with hair-pulling methods as it almost always damages the surface of the skin.&nbsp;

How to prepare for your first laser sesh
Come clean, and try not to take caffeine beforehand. Whatever area you're going to get treated, caffeine can heighten senses&mdash;including pain&mdash;so you might feel more discomfort than you should.&nbsp;

What to expect&nbsp;
At Skinhouse Laser, it's appointment-only to keep safety protocols in place. When you arrive, there are only a minimum number of patients at a time so you'll feel safe. Plus, there are air purifiers and air vacuums in each room to make sure the space is ventilated especially for those who are getting their faces treated.&nbsp;
You'll be led by your nurse or aesthetician to your room, and they'll leave you for a few minutes to use the bathroom and/or change into the sheet provided. As I was there for a Brazilian treatment, they only needed me to change bottom-down.&nbsp;

Each room is sanitized and tidy on top of the ventilation, and the bed is lined with disposable sheets. Your aesthetician will have you lie down and will begin to trim and shave the area as closely as possible.&nbsp;
Once cleaning up is done, laser begins with the aesthetician providing you with protective shades or goggles against the light emitted by the laser. This kind of laser no longer requires the cold gel, and no longer has the device pressed onto the skin directly. The only thing that will come into contact with the skin is the laser itself, which feels like a forceful shot of hot air.&nbsp;
In terms of pain levels, a Brazilian&nbsp;wax&nbsp;is still the most painful hair removal method and general experience ever, so if you've gone through that, this will be a walk in the park for you. This laser is actually less pain and more of surprise at the sudden heat "shot" at your skin. You're done in 20-30 minutes&mdash;the aesthetician will clean you up and apply anti-inflammatory cream afterwards, and you're good to go!
